Samsung UN55D8000 55-Inch 1080p 240Hz 3D LED HDTV
The Samsung UN55D8000 series has a unique, visually stunning design that minimizes the frame around the screen for a nearly all-picture look. It produces deep black levels with accurate color, along with excellent video processing and improved 3D picture quality. The Smart Hub Internet portal boasts more apps and streaming services than the competition, along with a functional Web browser, and is easier to use thanks to the included dual-sided Bluetooth keyboard with a screen and QWERTY keyboard. Samsung includes two pairs of 3D glasses.
The Samsung UN55D8000 TV picture comes as close to "naked" as you'll ever see outside a projector. It doesn't have much of anything around the screen, and the measurements are as sexy as any to TV design aficionados: the "bezel" is 0.2 inch by Samsung's count, and the distance from the edge of the picture to the edge of our 55-inch review sample's panel is 0.375 inch according to our tape measure. All the UN55D8000 inputs are located on the rear of the TV. They include four HDMI inputs, one each component and composite input (as mention, these require the supplied dongle), 3 USB ports, 1 D-sub 15 PC input, F-type antenna input and an Ethernet jack (there is also built-in Wi-Fi).
The new-for-2011 remote control is an asymmetrical, wedge-shaped dual-sided affair. The A-side has the standard TV controls with a numeric keyboard, and the usual source, menu, volume, channel +/-, tools, etc. buttons. There’s a backlight for this side. New for 2011 is an “E-manual” button for an electronic user manual. There's a big difference between seeing the game and seeing every split second of it. That's where Auto Motion Plus 240Hz technology comes in. All the action in every frame is analyzed and then adjusted so nothing goes by in a blur. From quarterbacks to cyber warrior, the action is always smooth, sharp and fluid. Access all your Smart TV features or DLNA network content without the need for a wired connection or add-on device. The UN55D8000 has Wi-Fi connectivity right out of the box.
The UN55D8000 performed well overall in color accuracy category. The skin tones of Sam and Alan in Chapter 3 and Chapter 19, for example, looked as accurate as on our reference, as did the green trees and the pale face of Quorra in Chapter 19. Saturation was very good and we appreciated that near-black areas didn't veer far into blue. The exception, again, came toward the edges of the screen, where blue crept in and tainted colors in midbright and darker ranges. Samsung includes 3D glasses because the UND8000 series is currently widely available bundled for free with a 3D starter kit, which includes 3D Blu-ray exclusives ("Shrek: The Complete Collection 3D" and a voucher for "Megamind") as well as two pairs of Samsung's new active 3D glasses,
The UN55D8000 has a lot going for it, Internet applications, thin bezels, excellent signal processing, accurate color, and good 3D performance. However we find the poor uniformity a deal breaker for readers seeking the highest quality HDTV. Taken as a whole we award the Samsung UN55D8000
what's the difference between 60 hz and 120 hz when it comes to led/lcd tv's?
I'm looking at all these new LED (3D) LCD tv's. What does the "hz" mean? I know it has something to do with the refreshing rate but can you tell me if it's something where I can actually tell a difference? Or let me ask this... when or how can I tell a difference between the two?
Hz hertz. It's the refresh rate if each pixel. The higher the rate the less jittery and more smoothe the picture looks. But don't be fooled by tvs offering more then 120 hz because the human eye won't tell the difference so don't spend extra money on 240hz tvs. Only LCD tv apply. Plasmas never suffered from jitter
