Music is a great art technique that conveys feelings and emotions as poignantly as paintings, literature and other art form does. Music presents an essential role in all country’s culture; it has been presented for entertainment, religious expression, and a lot more.
Music gave a huge contribution in every country’s history; for hundreds of years the Roman culture and Greek influences shaped Spanish music. Other than the Romans, the Visigoths also arrived, an East Germanic tribe, then after them came the Jews, then followed by the Moors; these series of events led to the different influences on Spain and its culture and music that made Spain’s musical style and forms extraordinary. One interesting music and dance form is the Flamenco which was widely believed to be Spain’s national dance because of the association people have created of Spanish culture and Flamenco. Contrary to popular belief, it is only known to one region in Spain which Is believed to be Andalusia, an autonomous community which is noted to be second biggest in terms of land area in the country. The vicinity around Andalusia have different music because of the many influences from different countries.
Flamenco, an Andalusian traditional folk music, has three components; one is cante or song, the baile or dance and the guitarra or guitar. The rapid steps and transitions as well as the loud, fancy foot works sets the Flamenco apart as a dance style. It’s interesting that very little is studied about the ancestry of this known type of dance.
Andalusia was one of the poorest, most ignored locations in Spain during the period when Flamenco first made its fame in the country. Andalusia was made up of gypsies, Jews, Moors, and other nationalities that were considered to be lower class during those periods, and naturally they were disrespected by the upper class people back then. Since it was mostly practiced by the lower levels of society, historians and upper class society that era neglected what music and dance the common people are doing, so there are very little records that can be acquired. Another essential reason why it’s difficult to tract its ancestry is because the poor people who practiced the music only preserved the art by oral traditions because they do not have literacy and does not know how to write; in addition to that the poor people during those times were being persecuted during the Spanish Inquisition in 1492.
Researchers, historians and experts are still discussing and learning the facts to find out the exact history and roots of Flamenco; how Flamenco got its name is still unsolved. However, one face is clear which is that Flamenco has affected dance cultures worldwide.
