A Index of Terminology About Epson Compatible Ink Cartridges in the UK

As you are looking, in the UK, for Epson compatible inkjet cartridges to use in your printer, one of the worst things that can happen is to have to deal with incomprehensible technical lingo which is hard or not possible to grasp. Here's a brief glossary of a few of the most important terms that refer to inkjet printers.

Epson Compatible Ink Cartridges -Banding refers to areas of tone or colour that occur when the printer is unable to make a smooth transition from one tone or colour to another.

Bleeding refers to the fact that colours won’t stay separated from one another. In fact, they begin to separate and combine.

CMYK refers to Cyan, magenta, yellow and black. These four colours are employed in nearly all inkjet printer cartridges.

Composite colours is a term used to refer to colours that are obtained by mixing the basic CMYK palette in varying quantities.

Epson Compatible Ink Cartridges -Dithering is a method or technique where dots of the primary colours (CMYK) are combined in varying patterns to create a larger colour spectrum

DPI means dots per inch, it’s the method by which a printer’s resolution is determined.

Feathering stands for the amount of text is printed. The non-occurrence or the occurrence of feathering is involved with the paper grain and ink stickiness. In general, papers with rough grains are more susceptible to feathering.

GDI is graphical device interface –also known as– the default graphical language of the Windows OS. A printer that's GDI compliant will print a true representation of a Windows screen without having to translate it into a printer language.

Half toning is the technique of joining the 4 fundamental colours of ink (CMYK) in colour speckled designs.

Parallel port is a connection on a printer where for the cable that links the computer and printer. Byte after byte, the computer forwards eight bits of information. Bits are placed side by side unlike a serial port which gets the 8 bits of data lined up one before the other.

PCL means printer control language which is a correspondence procedure that lets a PC correspond with and direct what a printer does.

Piezoelectric depicts the properties concentrated crystals which will move back and forth as it is given electrical charge. Inkjet printers use this behaviour to power the tiny nozzles that deposit ink onto the paper.

Pigment inks is compiled of diminutive pieces of colouring inside liquid. Proponents of pigment inks claim that they bleed, run and feather less while giving deeper and more vivid colours.

Thermal means leaving ink on a paper which makes use of heat.

Epson Compatible Ink Cartridges -True black refers to a black colour made by a different black ink The outcome is a truer black than the one created through a mixing cyan, magenta and yellow.

USB stands for universal serial bus, a communication protocol that has superseded the parallel port for printers. USB permits “hot swapping” pieces of equipment without restarting the computer.

Help needed connecting an old A1 parallel port plotter to my much newer laptop?

I have an 18 month old Philips Freevents X58 laptop which I need to connect to an HP Designjet430 plotter with a parallel connection. The laptop has a PC Express Card Slot which measures around 5.5cm x 0.5cm. Can anyone tell me what component I need to purchase to be able to connect the laptop and plotter? (The plotter also has a serial port if that makes it easier).

What a coincidence. I did just this last night with an HP 430 upgraded to colour (HP 450c). I bought a parallel to USB converter cable on EBay and simply ran the parallel/usb driver disk that came with it. I had problems though getting it to work with vista and ended up using an older laptop with XP on it. There are no Vista drivers for HP430 as far as I'm aware.
